Firmly established and brought to international recognition by Pina Bausch, the most universal definition that term " Dance Theatre " ( Tanztheatre ) brings to mind is the union of genuine dance and theatrical methods of stage performance , film , music , text , movement from daily life , and speech with no specific limitations , creating a new , unique form of modern dance , which in contrast to classical ballet , distinguishes itself through an intended reference to reality both the performers and audience share .
Liberated from all vanity and superficiality , dance once again became an expression of inner emotions in this genre of performance , communicating with the audience specific situations , feelings and images in a collage - like manner usually without a narrative plot . Dancers are not trying to only show off their technical skills but also " perform " while actors , singers, and other stage elements play as significant a role and are not mere additions .
Everything on stage counts , and altogether aims to stimulate the audience to follow trains of throughs or to reflect on what the theatrical piece expresses . It is now time for the audience to take part in thinking and interpreting in their own ways .
